Open book with highlighterIt dawned on me as I wrote that headline that it’s rather ironic, given the company logo for Now Hear This, Inc.  And yes, now your eyes are going to immediately seek out a refresher of what the NHT logo is.  After all, we are curiosity seekers, aren’t we?  We don’t know what we don’t know.

Or do we?

In our quest to learn more and more – yes, in general, but more so about what we do for work or for fun, or both – we are always pursuing more information.  We’ve become a society that largely will just hold up our smartphone and say, “Okay, Google… (insert question here).”  Or, for the iPhone users, I believe it’s a command directed at Siri.

Still, however, there are scores of books being written.  Authors are being interviewed (or seeking to be) everywhere that there’s a willing host, so they can plug their book.  Some folks I talk to prefer books being read to them while they drive (audio books).  Still others like the Kindle.  To each his own.

The bottom line is, book reading is still alive and well in 2017.  It must be since I have felt that over the last week every time I turn around I keep getting the same message about reading books.  It’s said that the top scholars, leading business professionals, success stories, and more, are all gaining deeper insight from reading books.

I do a “Promoting Your Music Career” workshop and early on I say that some of what I’m about to present sounds like common sense or fundamentals, but then I challenge the audience with, “But then why aren’t you doing them?”  Similarly, you probably just asked yourself, “Really?  A blog to tell me I should be reading books?”  But, let’s perform the same self-audit here.

Are you currently reading a book?  If so, is it helping you grow as a person or a professional, or is it just some time-filler?  If you’re not reading anything, why not?  And when was the last time you read a book?

I’m currently reading a book by someone who will eventually be a guest on “Now Hear This Entertainment” so that he can share some of that music business information during an interview with me.  While some might consider it show prep, it’s also informing me and helping me learn what his opinions and advice are, plus, I don’t know what I don’t know if I never pick up his or any other book.

It seems that everyone has time to surf Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or whatever other social media platform has become their guilty pleasure.  However, think of how much more productive you could be if that time was used to read instead.  Perhaps you could read one or two pages, or, one or two chapters!

If you’ve read (or are reading) something helpful that others can benefit from, post the title, author, and what the book is about here in our Facebook group.  Share the knowledge.

(A reminder that there is an Amazon banner here on our site that you can click on to get to their site to purchase books, music, or whatever else it is you’re looking for from them.)
