Two nights ago, I was out at a place that had live music. The performer said from the stage that it was only their second time performing since things opened back up and the first time being back (playing) inside somewhere that people weren’t wearing masks.
Huh? Clearly, they were referring to the end of the pandemic. Now, before I go on, let me throw out all the disclaimers, just to cover myself.
Yes, I realize that lots and lots of people have compromised immune systems. Of course, I certainly realize they are at greater risk, and everyone has the right to choose how they want to respond to the threat of Covid. I’m not here to debate masks and all that stuff. I’m not a doctor or a lawyer and I can’t and won’t be held responsible because of something someone chose to do or not do because of something they read in one of my weekly blog posts.

But c’mon, now. Never mind that I live in and thus saw this person performing over the weekend in Florida, where we’ve been the ones joked about by comedians who’ve said, “What did the pandemic last here for, one weekend?” Heck, not only have things been back open around the country for some time now, but one need look no further than the Instagram accounts of past guests that have been on my weekly “Now Hear This Entertainment” podcast. Those are the people who I follow on that platform and, my gosh, I’ve seen them posting about live performances for some time now.
Even the cruise industry is back up and running with no restrictions on passengers getting on board and sailing with them.
So again, while acknowledging that, yes, some people have health reasons why maybe they’ve been slower behind the rest of us, we’re about to turn the calendar over to 2023 in a few weeks. Late next month will be two years since I was hospitalized with Covid. I had it bad, but I still toughed it out to keep the podcast on track.
What are you still holding back and why?
I don’t just mean for Covid reasons. But life IS too short and if you’re waiting and waiting for something that’s holding you back from doing what you love and/or chasing your dream, gosh, what’s it going to take for you to “break on through to the other side,” to steal a line from a song by The Doors.
Set some attainable goals. Reward yourself for hitting certain mileposts. Whatever it takes to create some incentive to keep yourself moving forward, “Now is the time, now is the best time. Now is the best time of your life,” to borrow some lyrics from the Carousel of Progress ride inside one of the theme parks an hour away from me over at Disney.
In my personal life I often talk about people who just stay in their own town and never go anywhere. I don’t mean exotic travel, but they don’t even leave the state that they live in. They’re missing out on so much and it doesn’t require a massive bank account to take a trip somewhere and enjoy yourself and come back saying, “I’m glad I did that.”
You know what you want for your career. Don’t be late to the game. Act now so you too can say, “I’m glad I did that.” Watch where it can take you. See where it will lead.
It’s not the peer pressure statement of “all your friends are doing it,” but, my gosh, so many people around you are out there doing what they do and thriving. Make the decision to get out there and do the thing you love.
