“It's always scary to throw out the ideas that are extremely personal to me. But I also know that's part of trusting a room and taking a swing.”
“I want my songs to reach as many people as possible when I write them. So, I sort of have to take my own personal stuff out of it for the sake of the song and the reach and the connectivity for other people.”
“I'm a songwriter. I have a gift. I don't want every song to be about girls and trucks and tailgates. I want to say something more.”
“I won a competition called Toyota Star Maker, which Keith Urban won not too long before me. It's basically the American Idol of country music in Australia. So, it's a highly coveted award. And with that, I won a year of festival placements, like playing to 20,000, 40,000 people at festivals. I won a car for a year, I toured, and I won a record deal as well. So, I put out a single in that year that went top four.”
“I got a publishing deal within three months. I had two hit singles within the first three years of my publishing deal.”
“When I'm performing, I switch out of writer mode and into front woman mode. But I mean you can never really switch that off and I'm thankful for it.”
“I went back for something called CMC Rocks about six years ago. I played a round with Thomas Rhett, Luke Combs and Australia's biggest country act, Troy Cassar-Daley. We played to 6,000 people in a round.”
“Our plane essentially on the return flight had an engine fire over the middle of the Caribbean.”
“There are a lot of writers I trust in town and if they bring the person to me and they're like, ‘I really think this kid could be something,’ I want to be open to that forever and ever.”
“It's all about human connection at the end of the day and I'm so freaking grateful I get to do it by way of song.”
“Write everything down. If I can tell anyone anything, even if it's the crappiest idea you think of, if there's something in the bones of it, write it down, edit later.”
