She recently released her ninth studio album. She is a seven-time San Diego Music Award Winner and has performed at major venues ranging from Abbey Road Studios in England to the House of Blues in Hollywood to The Bitter End in New York, and even the Bluebird Café in Nashville. She is playing 12 shows in 17 days in the UK in July.
“I have recorded in Nashville before but this was the first time I did not use my band. Because I wanted to get the sound that (that producer) can do in the studio, I needed to allow him to be able to work with the people he knew he could get that sound from. And that’s basically what I was working with him for! And so I talked to my band about it, and that was not an easy thing to do.”
“It was a whole brand new experience for me and it was exciting and terrifying at the same time!”
“It’s so important to build true, real relationships. And not just, ‘How can you help me? I need this. What can you do to help me?’”
“It’s an emotional connection that, when you’re on stage and you’re performing your songs and you’re giving from your heart and your soul, you’re giving to an audience that desperately needs to feel something and forget their week or whatever.”
“These days, with what’s going on in the world, music is an escape for a lot of people.”
“Asking is free. All somebody can say is No.”
“I’m not sure that a lot of artists realize this. Maybe they do, subconsciously… that being an artist is a spiritual job. That there is this connection with something more than yourself when you’re creating art, whether it’s painting or singing or writing songs or writing a book, you tap into something bigger than yourself, but also part of yourself.”
“People are waiting ‘til the last minute to buy tickets to your shows! I think it’s such uncertain times. In the past I could sell the place out a month in advance.”
“CDs are like your business card now.”
“I highly recommend working with drummers who sing because drummers who sing don’t bash as hard when you’re playing loud so that the singer has to sing around the sound. I think they play a little bit more dynamically because they know what it’s like to sing over the sound of drums.”
“Unfortunately for us this Brexit thing kinda really hurt us. Because, the pound is down, so, in one respect, hotels that are all on hold for us (for the UK tour) will actually be cheaper so that’s good. But everybody’s paying us in pounds, so we just lost a lot of money.”
“I’m happy to play music for three people or three thousand people.”
“Just having the dream of recording a CD and doing it – ‘cause so many people have always wanted to do it but they are just never able to get through it – and then somebody who actually records a CD, writes it, records it, produces it, and is holding it in their hands, I don’t care if you sell one, you’re a huge success. You’re a huge success because you did it and you’re getting it out there.”
“One thing about YouTube… is it’s such a great tool for getting people to follow you and getting people to know you as an artist (through) covering other people’s songs, because there are some people making a living just playing other people’s songs.”
